According to EthioTimes sources close to the matter, the killing of Amhara regional officials, which the government called a “coup” on June 15/2011, was organized in a wide structure and targeted military institutions and officials in Addis Ababa. Three hours after two regional officials, including the head of the Amhara region, Ambah Mekonen , were killed by gunmen while they were in their office in Bahirdar, the government announced that the commander of the Defense Forces, Saare Mekonen, who was with his retired military comrade, was killed by his guards at his residence in Addis Ababa.
